The Short Story Battle Royal By Ralph Ellison Is A Disturbing Story Ab
The short story "Battle Royal" by Ralph Ellison is a disturbing story about the conflicts between the black and white cultures and the main character and himself. In the story the conflicts between the two cultures had a definite impact on how the main character saw himself and caused the conflicts within himself. "Battle Royal" deals with racism and the suppression of the African American race and how it effected the actions of that culture. The main character of the story is an African American raised in a predominately white area in the early 1950's, where there was very little acceptance of non-white cultures. Throughout the story the character goes through an extreme revelation about how he was taught by the white culture to perceive himself and who he truly was as an African American male. In the exposition of the story or "background information" the main character talks about his grandfather and what he told his grandson on his deathbed about dealing with the white people. "Son, after I'm gone I want you to keep up the good fight. I never told you, but our life is a war and I have been a traitor all my born days, a spy in the enemy's country ever since I give up my gun back in the Reconstruction" (185). At first when his grandfather said this to the main character he didn't understand, but by the Fitzke, page 2 conclusion of the story both he and the reader can see what the grandfather was trying to tell him. The grandfather was talking about one of the main aspects of the short story, the conflict between the black and white cultures. The grandfather called himself a "traitor" to the white society because he would go along with what the white man said even though he did not want to. During the time in which this short story was written, the early 1950's, the African American culture, even though they were free, still had very few rights under the law. The white culture or society mistreated and abused the African American's with racial slurs and putting them as inferior to their own culture. There are several examples of this in the short story "Battle Royal." The white men at the boxing rink got pleasure from watching the black males beat each other to a pulp and receive painful shocks when they try to get the money they were promised. "And while I still held him I butted him and moved away. I felt myself bombarded with punches. I fought back with hopeless desperation. I wanted to deliver my speech more than anything else in the world" (191). This is obvious mistreatment of other human beings and would today be unacceptable in society. The fact that the black males were willing to participate in such a degrading and inhumane activity raises the important questi on, why? Why would they subject themselves to this kind of treatment? What would compel the black males to treat others of their own race so cruelly, merely for the pleasure of drunk, racist, white men? The answer to what compelled the black men is obvious, they did as the white men said to achieve a different goal, and they were traitors to the white men. The main character's Fitzke, page 3 participation in the battle won him money and the chance to give a speech. This speech ended up winning him a scholarship to the State College for Negroes and without even realizing it, he had been a traitor to the white men. The main conflict in the story is described primarily in the racist treatment of the white culture towards the African American culture. This conflict between the two races is not very apparent in the story because the African Americans do not fight back with violence, but rather with submission. The main character's silence seems to gain him the passage to a better future, or does it? The second aspect of the short story "Battle Royal" is the conflict between the character and himself. "All my life I had been looking for something, and everywhere I turned someone tried to tell me what it was. I accepted their answers too, though they

Getting through the most awkward interview moments
Getting through the most awkward interview moments At some point in your career, youââ¬â¢re going to have an awkward interview moment. It may be something you say; it may be coming from the interviewer; it could be anything. In the end, all you can do is laugh it off and hope for the best (or start working on the next opportunity), but there are also some strategies you can implement that can make things a little smoother in the meantime. 4 ways to ease interview awkwardness1. When you donââ¬â¢t know the answer to a questionYour brain is shouting, ââ¬Å"Stall for time!â⬠while you think about the answer to a question you donââ¬â¢t understand- or just plain donââ¬â¢t know. The problem is that the interviewer can tell that youââ¬â¢re a) stalling for time or b) bluffing your way through if you try to get around the answer. Your best bet is just to be honest.ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t knowâ⬠isnââ¬â¢t a great response, but try framing it differently. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s a good question! Can you clarify what you m ean by the [X-Y-Z] process?â⬠2. When youââ¬â¢re trying to avoid an elephant in the roomLetââ¬â¢s say youââ¬â¢re interviewing at Y Corp, and Y Corp just happens to be infamous for shady corporate behavior or poor reviews by former employees. You definitely donââ¬â¢t want to lead with that, but you might have legitimate concerns about what it would be like to work there. Instead of putting the interviewer on the defensive, try framing it as a question about what the culture is in the office, and whether the company is addressing some of the issues raised in public. If your query comes from a place thatââ¬â¢s thoughtful and curious, rather than accusatory, it creates less friction with the interviewer.3. When youââ¬â¢re being asked about highly personal informationItââ¬â¢s illegal for employers to hire (or not hire) based on factors like religion, family status, or ethnicity. So if you find yourself being asked questions about this (either directly or in an indirect way, like through small talk), you can redirect. You donââ¬â¢t have to come on strong, talking about legal employment statutes, but itââ¬â¢s okay to steer the conversation away. For example: if you think the interviewer is trying to figure out if youââ¬â¢re likely to have children in the near future, emphasize that youââ¬â¢re committed to the job as a priority, regardless of what is going on in your personal life.4. When you got fired from your last jobIt happens. Not every job ends with a seamless transition to the next one. If youââ¬â¢re trying to cover a firing (even if you were fired for something you did), itââ¬â¢s not necessarily a dealbreaker, and you should be prepared to talk about it. Practice your response ahead of time for a question like, ââ¬Å"Why did you leave your last job?â⬠or ââ¬Å"Can you tell me about the circumstances when you left your last job?â⬠Practicing it beforehand can decrease anxiety in the moment- a plan in place means you know exactly what to say. It can also help you modulate your tone, because you really donââ¬â¢t want to seem angry or defensive in front of a potential new employer.Be sure to limit your answer to just the pertinent info. If you find yourself inclined to start with, ââ¬Å"Okay, hereââ¬â¢s the story of what really happened. My boss was a total jerk, andâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ then itââ¬â¢s time to edit. Keep personal details and opinions out of it. And itââ¬â¢s fine to give a brief, one-or-two sentence discussion of what happened. The interviewer isnââ¬â¢t looking for a saga- just the basic understanding. And above all else- be positive. Even the worst situations can provide valuable learning opportunities, so you can say, ââ¬Å"It was a challenge, but it taught me much more about how to handle a situation like this proactively and helped me refocus my energies on the skills I needed to build.â⬠Being able to get through these awkward moments can make the difference between a failed interview and a saved one. Staying calm and talking through it can usually fix an embarrassing moment and hel p you get things back on track.

Database Configurations Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Database Configurations - Assignment Example Most organizations do not rely on a single database configuration to be followed across the board. The purpose of having multiple database configurations and settings is similar to the principle of hedging or diversifying risk ââ¬â the multiple configuration serve as barriers to employees who wish to internally cause damage, collect data about the company or use the information for unauthorized purposes (like selling to a third party). Multiple database configurations can come in various forms: having dedicated database servers, multiple platforms like SQL, Oracle and MySQL and a mix of the above. The idea is that organizations and their IT managers feel safer when information and their data sources are scattered across various configurations. This allows them to reduce the risks of data losses and hacking. The former is avoided because if there is a data failure, then it is likely to be restricted to the particular configuration only due to the fact that multiple configurations are often needed to be enforced across different physical data sources. As for hacking it is important to have different configurations because it restricts the success of hackers, viruses and other automated attempts to gain unauthorized access to data.

Assignment 5 Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1
Assignment 5 - Case Study Example More certainly, the noise was intense between the walls separating these two companies despite the absent of activities in my client premises. Notably, your machines were still running at the time of my evaluation. This noise is highly disrupting the activities in my clientââ¬â¢s offices thereby affecting productivity of her employees. Therefore, it is my humbly requesting for you to allow me to conduct these measurements, so that proper recommendation may be arrived at towards curbing this problem. I intend to conduct this survey at different times of the day particularly early in the morning before your machines start running and late in the evening (4: 00 and 4:30) when only your office is at work. Kindly allow me to conduct this activity in your organization at the stipulated hours. In the contemporary society, all workers or employees spend most of their daily time at workplaces or offices where the comfortable and health indoor environment must be acquired naturally (Olpin and Hesson 27). Additionally, for the management to heighten the efficiency and productivity of the companyââ¬â¢s investment, it must provide conducive indoor or office environment to increase the intellectual productivity of its employees. Notably, the improvement of the economic effects of the quality of the indoor environment on the productivity of the employees is relatively greater compared to the buildingsââ¬â¢ life cycle (Mital and Kumar 88). Therefore, it is vital for any management to improve the quality of the workplace environment to increase the productivity of their employees. There should beà noted that there are underlying differences between sound and noise. Sound is any sensory perception while noise compounds unwanted sound. Noise is never friendly to human production since is an enormous distractor (Mital and Kumar 120). Moreover, it often affects mood and emotions as well as thinking, actions, and

Effective Teamwork Questionnaire Essay Example for Free
Effective Teamwork Questionnaire Essay Answer each question in 200 to 300 words, using specific information from the text, ââ¬Å"Helping Annieâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Team Buildingâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"Building a Team of Talentâ⬠videos, and your research and experience. 1. What are the characteristics of effective teams? How will you ensure your collaborative team works effectively? Effective team are important, and their functions crucial to their success. I have found that clear goals, relaxed environment, open communication, and freedom to express ideas and feelings are great ways to ensure success. In the video ââ¬Å"Helping Annieâ⬠, the dynamics of the team were lost due to lack of information, who was right and who could be trustworthy. When team members meet, they should feel as though they blend in with the group. They should feel a commitment to the goals and achievements to the group. What I know about groups are, that having valued diversity, defined roles, balanced participation, and cooperative relationships help with moving the group to a positive outcome. As a participative leader, as it is said in our eBook Working In Groups, ââ¬Å"there is a balance of primary roles and when team members know their roles, work to their strengths, and actively manage weaknesses.â⬠(Engleberg, 2013, p. 55). I will commit myself to ensuring I respect commitments, consistent communication to the group, collaborate, and contribute to the groupââ¬â¢s goals and ideas with valuable information that helps in the decisions. I will also be aware of the groupââ¬â¢s diversity, talents and dynamics. I bring knowledge of how to deal with problems, planning techniques and ways to improve myself within the group. 2. How will you deal with behavior that hurts your teamââ¬â¢s objectives? With conflict in a group environment, I would handle it with respect, recognition, focused on accountability and be aware of unfulfilled needs of that particular team member. I would not reward the difficult behavior nor would I encourage the disruptive behavior. I believe that if you ignore it or ââ¬Å"sweep it under the matâ⬠it takes time, energy away from the group, and Ià would want the group to resolve it quickly. I would make sure that I/we do not citizen or ââ¬Å"brandâ⬠that person as a trouble maker. I would work together with the group and the individual and encourage each other to focus on the groupââ¬â¢s interests and not individualââ¬â¢s position. It is also important to look for opportunities that encourage and empower each team member in the group. I would express a sensitive listening ear to uncover the root of the problem. Listing out the objectives to the individual and the group and reminding them why we are here and how to accomplish them Practicing direct communications, body language and clarifying questions helps resolve the situation and gives the group clarity to the behavior. In dealing with behavior that is disruptive to the group can be a challenge in itself, however it can be resolved with patients and a good listener. 3. What are your proactive processes to keep a team member up to date if he or she misses a meeting? What are your backup plans if things are not working on your team? There are several great ways to keep a team member up to date. Develop and cultivate easy ways to stay connected with those that miss. Face-to-Face and computer-mediated communications are great ways to reconnect and share ideas, goals and feelings. Face-to-Face provide excellent results in effectiveness, comprehension, and gives opportunities to be educated on the use of technology. It builds up respect, inclusion and grows your professional relationship with the team member and group. Update through venues such as emails, skyping, this can be challenging to coordinate, this provides another source of information. This can save time, money and bring the meeting/information to others that live far away. When things do not work out as they are supposed to, I chose to take a moment and find out where things went areaway. Encourage others to share and discuss what happened and create new plans, goals that incorporate processes that help us stay on track. Back up plans help in always being prepared for when things donââ¬â¢t just right. When setting up your backup plans, tap into the group and find team members that have knowledge and expertise in planning. As I use this, it will set up the entire team in a supportive and positive atmosphere. 4. How will you use technology to support your teamââ¬â¢s efforts? What are someà questions you should ask? Working with technology has made it easier to communicate, track the individuals / groups progress and increasing productivity. With using an assortment of media platforms such as emails, Skype, video conferencing, instant messaging, and facetalk. These software programs can assist in better group communication, making decisions, and discussing issues easily. I will educate, create a ââ¬Å"how toâ⬠of resources that will include information on each media platform. I would bring the group together in collaboration to see where they are with technology and create a smaller group to assist in the training. As new technology is made available, have continued training and education of the group as to stay current with technology. As with new technology always assessing the software, cell phones, computers, servers and other products are current. This will produce a group that is collaborating, productive, which will benefit the company and group. Asking questions is a great way to understand and know your group. With technology, it is important to find out what media platforms the group are already using. I would also ask how can we stay on task with these different media platforms and which ones work best for the group. Stay consistent with the goal/ objective and have a group that through technology use, becomes one unit! 5. Is your team more task-focused or relationship-focused? Why? What are the implications to your team? I find that our group is a mixture of both task-focused and relationship-focused. I have seen just in the last class that we all want to succeed and grow from each others experience. With having the mixture of the two, the work is defined, and roles expected. There are structures in place; a plan devised and we are organized to meet our tasks. As the group continues to work together, there is a supportive, motivating, and collaborating group. We are concerned with each person ideas, thoughts and actions. With these two types of people in the group, we can be productive, accomplish a lot and have a good time in doing it. Although with task-focused or relationship-focused, set up activities and follow up and follow through. With tasks, you can do it with encouragement and empower each team member to always do their best. Through the recommendations from our text this week, have an agenda, plan out your tasks, involve each team member, listen, and encourage them. By engagingà your team, you can meet the challenges of business head on and with seasoned team members involved you can pull from their experiences and knowledge. They will become confident, learning new skills and lead successful change. REFERENCES Engleberg, Isa. (2013). Finding Inner Peace :: Personal Narrative Essays
Finding Inner Peace "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself." I am thinking about the time when my best friend died, and when I stopped being myself and my life started going to hell. It happened maybe two or three years ago. The day is very clear in my memory. The weather was cold and nasty. The monotonous rain made everything outside look gray. I was at home, waiting for my girlfriend to arrive. I was sitting on the couch drinking hot tea and feeling warm and cozy. My dog was there too, I remember. We were watching a talk show, but I was not paying much attention to what was going on. All I cared about was my girlfriend was coming home and that we would be able to see each other again. She had left only four weeks earlier, but I had already missed her greatly. We had been friends since the 9th grade. In the beginning we were enemies; we hated each other. Oh, how we fought! One time she accused me of taking her purse, knowing what a notorious prankster I was, even though I had no idea what she was talking about. Later she found her purse in her friends locker. It seems she had forgotten she had put it there. This turned out to be the first, but not the last, accident that would occur. What didn't we argue about? After about, four years, we became the best friends ever. We were perfectly compatible with each other. We began spending all our time together. We were vital to each other. I came to know each and every detail about her life as she did about mine. It was the most enduring friendship of my life. I looked at the clock above my head. Six fifty. She was supposed to arrive at five o'clock. I felt uncomfortable, some weird feeling crawled around my heart. I did not understand it. I waited and waited. It was dark already and I was afraid of being in solitude. I couldn't stand it anymore. Seven o'clock. The phone rang and it startled me. Who might it be? I wasn't expecting a phone call from anyone. I got up from the couch and picked up
